Diffusion and Osmosis Hypothesis:
If I put an egg in water then it will grow because the egg is absorbing most of the water in the cup. If put an egg in corn syrup then it will shrink because the corn syrup is taking parts of the egg away. When the egg grows it is called Diffusion and when the egg shrinks it is called Osmosis.
(Osmosis is the passing of molecules through a membrane. Diffusion is the movement of molecules to even density)
Materials:
4 eggs
Corn Syrup
Vinegar
3 cups
Table Salt
Water
Scale
Food Coloring
Procedure:
We weighed each egg and recorded it.
Place eggs in vinegar for 3 days.
After those 3 days we took the eggs out. (Figure 1)
We next weighed each egg and recorded their weight now.
We placed each egg in their specific solutions. (Figure 2)
Egg 1 was placed in corn syrup, Egg 2 was placed in water, and Egg 3 was placed in Salt Water and left them for 3 hours.
Over the 3 hour time lapse we watched as they started to change. (Figure 3)
Then we took the eggs out of their solutions.
We next weighed each egg and compared their previous weights to their weights now.
They all changed in weight.
Observations:
We removed each egg from the Vinegar and each egg had no shell. Before we placed them in the vinegar they had a mass of 65 grams. But after we took them out of the vinegar they weighed 96 grams. Afterward it appeared that each egg had grown larger then a regular egg.
Eggs:
Mass 1
Mass 2
Mass 3
Mass 4
Egg 1
96 grams
89 grams
39 grams
86 grams
Egg 2
96 grams
90 grams
94 grams
94 grams
Egg 3
96 grams
98 grams
98 grams
74 grams
Conclusion:
In this experiment we learned how the eggs will shrink and expand in different solutions, like salt water, water, and corn syrup. It was exciting seeing each egg grow and shrink. It was a very interesting experiment, you should try it! After we finished the experiment we chose to cut each egg open, and that was very cool!
Relevance:
The reason why Osmosis keeps us alive is because our cells keep moving and generating waste for our bodies to move
